Going Beyond What You Think is Possible

Going Beyond What You Think is Possible

By Jim Holzknecht

If you would have told me over two years ago that I would accomplish a record setting yoga streak of over eight hundred and fifty consecutive days of Bikram heated yoga, I would have told you there was no way. Yet, somehow I did, one day and one posture at a time.

Similarly, if you would have told me that I’d co-interview many of the stars from the movies The Secret and What the Bleep Do We Know including Jack Canfield, Marci Shimoff, Bob Doyle, Joe Vitale, Amit Goswami and many others, I would not have believed you. But I did.

Co-producing the movie Beyond Belief (www.beyondbeliefthemovie.com) with Becky Hays, was a great opportunity for me to go beyond what I previously believed was possible. In fact, co-producing the movie was the main reason I initiated my consecutive day yoga streak. I wanted to challenge my perception of where I thought my limits were.

How often do we limit our potential by creating self-imposed ceilings on what’s possible? If you are like me, these limits can be found in every significant area of life such as relationships, money, career, health and creativity. These limits are made by a well-intending, reasonable mind which is hard wired for our safety, security and protection.

Millions of years of genetic coding pull for us to remain within the confines of a self-perceived veil of safety and to not venture beyond it. This is the machinery we’re born into. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this, after all it helped get us here. The problem is that often the cost of playing it safe, and not challenging these comfort-zone limits, is we end up suppressing our vitality, and potential.

I invite you to take some action today that challenges a limitation you’ve created for yourself in an area of your life that is important to you. If you hear the cautionary voice in your head warning you to not start or pursue this activity, notice and be with it, without having to fix or change it.

Take the action anyway. Commit yourself to taking this action now, no matter how small you think it might be. You never know where it will lead you. Go beyond what you currently think is possible, go beyond who you currently know yourself to be.

You Can Heal Your Life

As the experts in the documentary Beyond Belief suggest, one of the quickest ways to begin to shift subconscious programs is to begin to ‘shift’ your environment.

This does not mean you immediately drop all your friends or leave your spouse!  But simply making small changes around you can have a huge impact on your life.   Everything you see, hear, feel, the books you read, what you listen to, and yes, the people you hang out with, all have an influence on you.

So the more you can surround yourself with positive, uplifting, supportive messages, the faster you will change your subconscious beliefs about what is possible in your life.

You may want to visit the link to the right, “Links of Interest” for the latest and greatest self empowerment media, books, CDs, to inspire you with new ideas, as you begin to surround yourself  with the positive aspects of what you want to draw into your life.

And right now, if you have not watched this movie yet, go see Louise Hay’s inspiring movie, You Can Heal Your Life.  It will inspire you with a story of a woman who lived through dramatic changes in her own life, and give you another example of what is possible.

Being a Yes No or Maybe in Life

by Jim Holzknecht

Yes and no are a couple of the first words we learn as a child.  Maybe comes a little later when we begin to learn the finer art of negotiation and the payoff in keeping our options open.  Few of us give much thought to the connection these words have to the person we are being in life. You know, the person who interacts daily with family, friends, co-workers, the cashier at the convenience store, and so on. Here’s a question.  Would you say overall, on average, you are consistently being a yes, no or maybe in life?

Think back over the past couple of weeks. When asked to do things, or when given an invitation to do something, how would you characterize your “automatic” response?  Do you consistently say Yes? If so, was the Yes intuitively authentic or did it come from a sense of obligation or stem from some fear of looking bad in the eyes of others (this is really a No in disguise). Do you find yourself consistently doing things that you don’t want to do in your life? When requests are made of you, if you answer “Yes” but every fiber of your being screams “NOOOOO,” then that is really a “No.”

Did you answer “no” to requests and invitations or more importantly were you “BEING” a NO every time an invitation was extended to you or each time a new opportunity presented itself?  How would you characterize your “automatic” way of being?  Are you open and receptive and eager to learn new things, or are you closed off  (know everything already), resigned, cynical and fearful of new experiences and new people?

Here’s a test, when you say “NO” to requests, is it based in fear?  Are you resistant to try new things or to experience new situations because you are worried about making a mistake or about being judged by others?  Do you say “NO” when your intuition tells you “YES?”  If so, then you are being a NO to life. Being a NO to life is a path to foreclosed dreams, stillborn goals, and to living a quietly desperate, comfortably numb life.

Being a NO in life may show itself as that insidious inner voice which preemptively shoots down ideas as fast as you generate them, or it may be that fearful, sinking feeling which keeps you from pursuing a goal or passion. It’s the bully inner critic lurking in those behaviors or actions which can sabotage an idea, hope, wish or desire.

A good friend of mine was in the habit of saying “no” anytime anyone asked or invited him to do something.  He wanted to be in a loving, committed relationship but it wasn’t happening for him.  As an exercise, a personal coach invited him to say “YES” for one week no matter what the request (it had to be a legal activity of course).  He decided to take the coaching.  For one week he automatically said “yes” to all requests made of him instead of being an automatic “NO.” Similar to the changes that Jim Carey’s character went through in the movie “Yes Man,” he told me that this was one of the most transformational weeks of his life. He ended up taking a seminar which, if not for the commitment to say “yes” he would not have participated in. It was in that seminar where he met his wife. Being a “yes” opens doors and opportunities which do not present themselves when being a “no.”

Being a “maybe” in life is the purgatory of indecisive action. It might stem from a fear of making a mistake or some other subconscious resistance.  “Maybe” is the incessant brake applied to our lives which keeps us small and prevents us from pursuing our passions. It might show up as that sinking feeling of being stuck or a smoldering frustration of not being in action in some areas of our lives which are important to us.  I strongly recommend removing maybe from your vocabulary.

Check in with yourself and look at those areas of your life where you are being a “no” or a “maybe” or inauthentic “yes” (a “no” in disguise). Check in with your intuition. Is there some area of your life where you are being a “no” or “maybe” but you really would like to be a “yes?” If so, I invite you to try saying “yes” to any and all legal requests and invitations and activities for one week. See what opens up for you.

Keep a journal and note any feelings of resistance or fears when being a “yes.” Just observe and note them.  Chances are the feelings of resistance will diminish as you take some action in the face of a fear or resistant thought. Remember, “just be a yes!” Have fun with the exercise and see where it takes you.

The True Gifts

by Becky Hays, Producer

Today marks the one year anniversary of the DVD release of the documentary Beyond Belief, and I am grateful.

I am grateful for the journey.   In the process of creating this film, Jim and I applied the tools presented within the documentary, and the experience has enriched my life.

Making the documentary Beyond Belief has kept me ‘in the conversation’ of ‘walking the talk’. You cannot preach about gratitude and not be grateful.  You cannot expect others to practice present moment awareness, if you dwell in the past with regret or worry about the future.  You cannot teach about ‘negative thoughts’ without becoming aware of your own negative self-talk.

Living these tools has transformed my life.

Thanksgiving is behind us, and now the Winter Holidays are fast approaching.   But this is still a time for thanks-giving, for giving-thanks.  Gratitude is one of the most powerful tools presented in the documentary Beyond Belief.  When you express gratitude, when you find something each and every day to be grateful for, when you can truly  ‘feel’ gratitude, then you attract even more to be grateful for.

This holiday season stirs up a time of mixed emotions. Some people fall into depression and sadness while others leap up with happiness and joy.

You can choose how you want to be, this holiday season.  Choose to be grateful.  Choose to find something, each and every day, that you appreciate in your life.  Choose to see the good in the people around you (even as their bothersome habits annoy you)

If you feel alone, abandoned, or are missing someone who is now absent in your life, turn your attention to a person in need, and discover what you can do to help them.  What ‘true gifts’ can you offer this holiday season?

You may be surprised, when you offer your true gifts to others, at the benefits you will receive in return.

I co-produced Beyond Belief with Jim, with the intention of helping others discover these wonderful gifts presented in the movie: some of the most powerful tools to transform lives.   The amazing result of offering my time, money, energy, and focus toward this project, was the unexpected gift that came back to me, multiplied a thousand fold.  The process of creating this film has transformed my own life Beyond Words.

So I encourage you this holiday season, to find that heartfelt gratitude, and to share the true gifts you carry inside of you, now.  You may be pleasantly surprised at the results.

Marci Shimoff Excerpt from Interview for Beyond Belief

Excerpt from interview with Marci Shimoff for Beyond Belief:

One of my favorite tools is a very simple system developed by a woman named Byron Katie.  Katie, they call her. is one of the happiest people I’ve ever met, and Katie discovered one day that is wasn’t her circumstances in life that were causing her to be miserable but it was her thoughts about those circumstances.

She just naturally started to question her thoughts.  You know we have this belief that just because we have a thought means that its true.  Silly, just because you have a thought doesn’t mean that its true.  It’s very important to learn to question your thoughts.

Katie has developed a system called the work.  It’s a very simple system for asking yourself four questions, that allow you to really see if in fact your thoughts are necessarily true, and they allow you enough distance that you are able to dissolve some of those thoughts that are robbing you of your happiness, of your success, of your greater purpose and passion in life.

The four questions that are involved in the work are very simple.

The first question is:  “Is that true?”

So I have a thought, my thought is, my friend should be nicer to me.  Well,  is that true?  You might on first guess say yeah, that’s true!  Then you say.  Can I really know that that’s true?

That’s the second question:  “Can I really know that that’s true?”

The third question is:  “How do I feel when I have that thought?”

Generally when you have a thought like that you are going to feel contracted, you are going to feel less energy. you are going to feel judgemental.

And then the fourth question is:  “Who would I be without that thought?”

You know without that kind of judgement I might have more freedom in life.   I might be able to be more accepting, more loving of my friend,  I might not be so contracted.

So you ask those 4 questions.  Then there is a very interesting twist and that is: You do a turnaround statement.

So you take the original statement and you turn it around in some way.  So the thought:  my friend should be nicer to me, well, one possible turnaround statement is: I should be nicer to my friend.   Could you find a way that that could be true?

Another possible turnaround statement could be, I should be nicer to myself.   I think for most of us that one could be true.

It sounds like such a simple process, but it makes profound difference in peoples lives.   I have seen so many people who have had amazing changes, just by, on a regular basis, practicing this simple system called the work.

Jack Canfield on Attraction – Interview Excerpt from Beyond Belief

Excerpt from the interview with Jack Canfield for the film Beyond Belief:

Basically out thoughts are sending out signals like a radiowave and those radiowaves are basically saying I want things to come back into my life that match the vibration of that.  So if I’m in fear and resignation, then I’m going to attract more things to be in fear about and be resigned to.  If I’m in optimism thinking positive thoughts, then I’m going to attract things that will allow me and encourage me and reinforce that sense of positivity,  If  I’m in a state of gratitude I’m going to attract more things to be grateful for.  If I’m in a state of fear then I will attract more things to be afraid of.

The law of attraction to me means that I attract things that are similar vibration to what I’m putting out, simple way of saying it is like attracts like.  Now in physics we know that opposites attract, but in law of attraction what happens is, anything I’m vibrating at, anything out there in universe that is similar vibration will be attracted to me.  It’s actually law of harmonics so that if we have a piano in one room and we hit a C chord on the piano, if there were another piano perfectly tuned in the room, those same 3 or 4 strings on that piano would start to vibrate as well

So by law of attraction what happens is the feeling tone we have will attract and cause to vibrate at a similar level and move towards me.   I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been on an airplane and the thing that I’ve been thinking about, the next day, someone will be sitting by me on a plane or I’ll be sitting next to them in a restaurant or I’ll meet them in a meeting, and they will be exactly the solution I’m looking for.

My favorite example is when I decided I wanted to go to the Olympics in China, and I just started thinking that thought and visualizing that.  Two days later I was speaking at a convention in Vegas for a multi-level marketing company, and this guy walks up to me clearly Chinese and he says, “you’re Jack Canfield aren’t you?”, and I said yeah, he said, “Have you ever wanted to speak in China?” and I said yeah I do, more importantly I  want to go to the Olympics.   He said, “Here’s the deal.   I run a training company in china we would love to have you come speak, and my brother-in-law is on the Chinese Olympics committee.  I’m sure I can get you tickets.”

And that happens to me more and more often the more I get into a connection to source energy, connection to God however you want to call that.  The law of attraction just keeps attracting everything that I need to live the life of my dreams.

Being clear about what you want and having focus is critical to getting what you want. One of my mentors was a man named Buckminster Fuller.  He was an Einstein of our age back in the 50s, 60s, 70s and my favorite quote of his is: Clarity is power!

When you have clarity about what you want it’s like a laser beam.  You know right now, I’m being illuminated by a lot of light (in the room)  but they are very diffused and so those lights don’t have much power.  But if we take those lights and we put them in phase and we aim them like a laser beam we can cut through metal.

So the more focused we are, just like a magnifying glass focusing the rays of the sun, many of us as kids would start a fire with leaves by putting a magnifying glass on it, or a piece of paper.  We took the broad spectrum of the frequency of the sunrays and we focused and narrowed it down, and it becomes much more powerful.

How To Make Self Improvement Work Every Time

by Bob Doyle

There is an inherent problem with the approach most people take to self-improvement of any kind. There is a presupposition that there is something wrong that needs fixing. Perhaps it is true that there are areas in their lives that they wish to change. However, the mindset with which they approach transformation will very often NEGATE any positive results they might have. Why? Because all of their focus is on the PROBLEM they are trying to solve, rather than their vision for what their life will be like without the alleged problem.

There is a very basic physical natural law which ultimately determines ANY success on ANY level. This law dictates exactly what our experience will be from moment to moment. Best of all, this law is fully under our control at all times, even if we are not aware of it.

This “law” is the Law of Attraction.  Most of the time, you hear about this law in terms of how it will help you to attract wealth or abundance in general. However, the Law of Attraction transcends just those basic desires. The Law of Attraction dictates that you will receive back exactly what you “vibrate”…that is, what you are FEELING. Where is your attention? Is it on the feelings associated with the problem, or with the feelings of no longer having the problem?

If you approach self-improvement material with the desire to “get rid of the problem”, and if all your feelings are on how terrible or frustrating this “problem” is, Universal Law dictates that you will simply attract MORE of those feelings…more of the circumstances that brought the problem to you in the first place. The Universe isn’t “out to get you”. It is simply responding to the “request” that you are putting out by way of your feelings.

If, however, you approach your self-improvement solutions with high positive feelings associated with what your life WILL be…if you visualize your success with your program of choice on all sensory levels, particularly on the level of EMOTION, you will literally magnetically ATTRACT the success you are looking for! Miracles will occur!

While this may sound very “mystic” or even preposterous, I submit to you that EVERY aspect of your life right now has been brought to you in perfect response to your prevailing thoughts and beliefs which directly effect your emotional state, which in turn causes you to emit very specific and magnetic frequencies which attract like frequencies.

We must never forget that beyond simply being flesh and bone, we are, at a molecular level, ENERGY. And our personal energy obeys the same physical laws as all other Energy which we study more traditionally.

The wealthiest, most successful people in the world use the Law of Attraction (albeit often unconsciously) to effortlessly bring into their lives whatever they envision. This could be wealth, successful businesses, or satisfying relationships. Or, it could simply be wisdom, peace of mind, and a sense of purpose.

The big secret is that you truly CAN have whatever you want, regardless of how “pie-in-the-sky” this may sound. You need only learn a few key concepts about HOW to ask for what you want to begin receiving it in abundance! Despite what you may currently believe or have been taught, it is not the purpose of our lives to struggle, to work hard for years, or try to “figure things out”. Our job is to do what we love to do. When we do that with full trust and knowing that doing so will naturally attract our deepest desires, we become powerful magnets, which absolutely assures our success.

The Power of Intention part two of two

by David Hamilton Ph.D.

If you ask someone for help, more often or not they will. When you visualise something happening in your life, it is like sending out a call for help that is picked up unconsciously by people. Then, people who can help you are unconsciously drawn to you. Have you ever noticed that someone new has come into your life after you started hoping, praying, or visualising for something in particular to happen, or that someone you knew gave you new information or assistance. You also attract intuitions and suddenly get inspired with new ideas.

Quantum physics has revealed an interconnectedness to all things. And Carl Jung suggested that we share a collective unconscious mind. It has parallels with the Internet. Computers are separate from each other as they sit on our desks, but they are connected via the Internet, which is a shared repository of information. Similarly, the collective unconscious mind is a shared hive of information that all of us are connected to. When you hope, pray, or dream of something you want, your intention is felt by people at an unconscious level. Then the people who can help are drawn to be in the same place at the same time as you.

I often describe it using the metaphor of a spider’s web. How does a spider know that a fly is trapped in its web? It feels the vibrations. So in the same way, people feel the vibrations (at deep unconscious and quantum levels) of your hopes, prayers, dreams, and intentions, as you do theirs.

So when you want something in your life, imagine it clearly. And imagine it as if it is happening now. Your thoughts will attract it, either as intuitions and ideas or as people showing up in your life.

Most of us are experts at what I call the law of repulsion. I was a master of it for years. Whenever I wanted something, I must have invoked the law because I always seemed to get the opposite. Things got worse. It led me, when I was growing up, to conclude that if I wanted something there was no chance I could have it. I could only have the things I didn’t want, which was a bit of a bummer.

But the law of repulsion is really the law of attraction in disguise. We sometimes repel our goals because we spend more time complaining about how bad things are at the moment or that ‘ it’s not happened yet ‘, than we do actually imagining what we want. And just as energy flows to where attention goes inside the body, so reality flows in the direction of what you put your attention on in your life too.

The key is to keep your intention, periodically, on what you want instead of the opposite, which is what is happening now. When faced with current reality, just affirm that it is changing. What you want is coming to you. Play pretend, like a child does, every day or so for a couple of minutes.

For some people, change is rapid when they do this. For others, it’s a more gradual process and it takes discipline. But it’s worth it.

You can even wish the best for other people. I have noticed that good stuff happens in their life when I do this. People often show up in their life too, or little miracles happen in their life. All you are doing is giving them a little unconscious mental assistance, like you’re an angel I suppose.

I am a great believer in using the power of intention to make a positive difference in the lives of others, and in the world. I believe that we are far more powerful than we have ever believed ourselves to be. I believe that we have the ability to change the world. All we need to do is try.

Every act with a genuine heartfelt intent behind it sends out vibrations throughout the web that attracts new realities. So it’s not so much what you do, it’s the heartfelt intention behind it that’s matters. In other words, it’s the Thought that Counts!

The Power of Intention part one of two

by David Hamilton Ph.D.

Every thought and feeling changes something in your body. Think of a time when you got embarrassed. Your face went red didn’t it? This is the power of your mind to affect your body. It is your thoughts about yourself or about what people might be thinking of you that do it.

The placebo effect is another example of this. If a person is given a fake medicine but believes that it’s a real medicine then he or she will usually get better.

Some studies have shown the benefits of positive states of mind. It has been shown that thinking thoughts and feeling the feelings of gratitude or compassion, for instance, can make heart rhythms more coherent and boost the body’s immune system.

In other words, if you intend for your immune system to get a little boost, just spend five or ten minutes thinking nice thoughts about someone.

The mind even affects DNA. Our 25,000 or so genes are in a continual state of switching on and off, like light bulbs, as the body grows and repairs itself. But scientists now know that many of these genes respond to their environment. In other words, to what you eat, how much exercise you take, what you are thinking about, and how you feel. There is now a clearly defined link between emotions and biology. Thoughts and feelings change the chemical balance all throughout the body, producing chemicals and hormones called neuropeptides, which switch our internal systems, and our genes, on and off. So the body is hardwired to respond to your mind.

Ever since Dr Bernard Grad in the 1960′s showed that a healer could speed up the rate of healing of skin wounds on mice, there has been a lot of research into our ability to mentally intend positive changes in our bodies, and in the bodies of others. One explanation for how it works, in addition to the production of neuropeptides, is that mental intention sets direction for the flow of qi (chee, prana) around the body.

For thousands of years, eastern doctors have taught that qi travels around the body, following the acupuncture meridian system. If you have an injury somewhere in your body then the key to healing is to imagine it healed, or being healed. Qi will flow there, providing energy sustenance as well as vital nutrients for the tissue. And neuropeptides will also be produced that will boost the body’s healing capacity.

There’s a well-known story of a man who damaged his liver beyond repair in an accident. After spending a while in hospital he was sent home with tubes connected to his body. This was for life. But after learning about visualisation he spent hours visualising his damaged liver cells being repaired.

At first he saw the cells in his mind as black and shrivelled, but he imagined cleaning them, one by one, with an imaginary toothbrush, watching each turn a healthy pink colour.

After three months of visualisation he had an accident at home and one of the tubes was torn out of his body. He was rushed to hospital and x-rayed to survey the damage prior to an operation, where the doctors discovered that his liver was completely renewed.

Some scientists have taken the research even further. Recognising that a healer can affect a person’s body without touching it, they have taken biological material from inside the body and tested the power of intention to affect it.

In 2004, for instance, scientists from the California Pacific Medical Centre, the Institute of Noetic Sciences and MD Anderson Cancer Centre at the University of Texas found that practitioners of qigong could influence the growth of cultured human brain cells. Each practitioner, for a period of 20 minutes, directed healing intentions towards the cells and was able to increase their rate of growth.

Where it gets really interesting is when our thoughts affect things much further outside of the body.

Some research has shown that a thought about a person registers in their body. While hooked up to devices measuring electrical resistance in the skin, scientists measured changes in people depending on the thoughts held about them by people in another room.

In a few other experiments, the brainwaves of two people were monitored. When the scientists startled one of them, the brainwaves showed a peak, but so did the brainwaves of the other person. This is why we often have a sense of who is on the other end of the phone, even before we answer. Through over 60 separate scientific studies on this and related phenomena, the success rate of ‘guessing’ was 54.5%, when chance said it should be 50%. This doesn’t sound much, but considering it involved 33,357 individual trials, the odds of this just being chance are 200,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 to 1. That’s a 2 with 59 zero’s after it (202 octodecillion to 1!). People really do sense what others are thinking. I believe that this is why the law of attraction works. It is the law that says you attract what you focus on.
